Southern University Neon-Related Science Capabilities
Southern University has an established GIS Systems Laboratory that supports remote sensing and visualization efforts at the university. This laboratory is named as an official Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Authorized Partners Education Center. In addition to the laboratory, Southern is a research member institution of the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI), a fiver optics network that runs throughout Louisiana, connecting Southern to the Teragrid and other high-speed computational networks. This computing capacity has been expanded via a partnership with IBM that has provided additional infrastructure for Cloud Computing. Southern has utilized such tools to expand its ecological research experiences with studies on the Bering Glacier in Alaska and Coastal Zone Assessment studies along the Gulf Coast.
